The Padilla family is currently going through a very difficult situation involving homelessness and health problems. The family consists of Ms. Krystal Morales, and her four kids, two students are attending Sadler Elementary, Matthew in 3rd grade, Hailey in 4th grade and two other students attending Dr. Phillips High School, Ryan in 11th grade and Tristen in 12th grade. Tristen was born with congestive heart failure and has had multiple surgeries in his lifetime. The family moved from Ocala a few years ago so he can receive proper health care in the Orlando area. Currently Ms. Morales is separated from the person who used to be the backbone in the family and is no longer part of their life as of April of this year. After dealing with postpartum depression recently and losing her house Ms. Morales has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and high blood pressure and has emphysema. Her health has deteriorated a lot recently. She recently lost her job due to her health getting worse and being unable to walk or stand for long. Recently her doctor told her that she can’t stand for more than 4 hours a day. Her feet and legs are very swollen, and it has been hard to walk or move around a lot. Lately, Ms. Morales has had to be forced to discharge herself from the hospital so that she can make sure her younger kids make it to school and the older kids take the school bus.
The Padilla family have been staying in their car. Tristen works a part-time job after school, and whenever he gets paid he helps his family by paying for a night or two at a hotel. The family is currently on a waiting list to stay at a shelter that can welcome the whole family. Due to the housing crisis we are experiencing in our area it has been hard for the Padilla family to find something consistent at the moment.
