Last week, the Foundation team traveled to Tallahassee for the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations Winter Conference and Day at the Capitol. This annual trip is an important opportunity to connect with statewide partners and, most importantly, speak directly with legislators about how their support shapes the educational landscape in Orange County.

A key focus of our visit was helping leaders understand the powerful role of Florida’s $1‑for‑$1 Legislative Matching Grant Program. When combined with local partnerships, these matching funds fuel innovation, expand access to high‑quality learning experiences, and create pathways that prepare students for future careers. The program doesn’t simply maintain existing initiatives — it accelerates them. It turns promising ideas into meaningful action and action into opportunities that help students reach their full potential.

To help demonstrate this impact, we shared stories from across the district, including one from EcoClub — a program transforming STEM education and environmental stewardship at several Title I schools. With support from matching funds, more than 100 students are leading sustainability projects like hydroponic gardening and pollinator habitats, while also achieving significant academic gains. Students have even earned certification to feed rescued animals at SeaWorld and participated in unforgettable learning experiences, such as a sleepover near sea turtles. These opportunities build critical thinking, leadership, and real‑world skills that prepare students for future careers in STEM and conservation.

Across Orange County, matching funds support hands‑on career exploration, strengthen STEM learning, improve literacy outcomes, and create enrichment experiences that build confidence and curiosity. Throughout our conversations, one message became clear: the Matching Grant Program multiplies what schools are able to accomplish. It allows educators to broaden access, deepen learning, and offer experiences that would not be possible without this investment. These funds help students discover their strengths, explore new interests, and develop the skills they need to thrive in college, careers, and life.
